UP-CYCLING LIFE JACKETS & MINDSETS
Number of refugees fleeing to Europe to Lesvos, with the majority coming from war torn Syria and Afghanistan.
~ 300 000
More than three hundred thousand life jackets have been abandoned on the coast of Lesvos Island.
The life jackets piling on the island are environmental Time-
Bombs according to Mytilene Mayor.
The LIFT Project aims to respond to the current environmental and humanitarian crisis on Lesvos, Greece that developed due to the large arrival of refugees to Europe.
The project aims to gain knowledge on existing life jacket upcycling projects and contribute to the current efforts of cleaning up the local environment. The project will also serve as a platform to shed light on the environmental crisis in Lesvos, the creative efforts of projects turning a negative situation into a positive tomorrow as well as telling the story of today’s refugees in Europe.
The name of “the LIFT project” has a threefold meaning:
Physically LIFTing the life jackets, cleaning the beaches
of Lesvos, Greece.
Developing ideas to LIFT life jackets from their original use
to second and third life uses.
LIFTing the mindset of Europeans towards becoming
more positively proactive towards the refugee crisis.
